Insight

The CityLAB Berlin 2024 annual review microsite marks both a celebration of the year’s accomplishments and the lab’s 5th anniversary. Designed as an engaging digital report, the site presents CityLAB’s highlights milestones, and impact in a celebrative, visually dynamic format. It underscores CityLAB’s mission to connect public administration, citizens, and technology experts around sustainability, digital participation, and open innovation through interactive storytelling and distinctive visuals.

Process

The main focus was to showcase the many facets of CityLAB Berlin—the diversity of its services, projects, and programmes—in a way that feels cohesive and engaging. I designed dynamic layouts using CityLAB’s isometric shapes, with scroll-driven animations and SVG masks to add visual interest and guide users through the content. The bilingual site, built with SvelteKit and vanilla JavaScript, features sections on the lab’s mission, key projects (like “Gieß den Kiez” and the Kiezlabor), events, and community initiatives. Regular feedback from the CityLAB team helped ensure the content and interactions reflected the collaborative, experimental spirit of the lab.

Personal role

I was responsible for the design and front-end development, from layout concepts to implementing animations and interactive elements. I took CityLAB’s brand identity and adapted it into a celebratory version for the anniversary, building custom visual features like animated stats, image galeries, and fun fact nuggets. This project allowed me to use playful, content-driven storytelling to make what makes CityLAB unique palpable.
